We’re happy to announce the opening of our brand new Ladies of Letters Facebook page! You can follow us there instead of here if you find that easier. Or do both! Both is good.
Can you believe it’s October already? Halloween is less than a month away! Not only that, but we still need about a dozen more costumes to reach our goal of fifty for the kids at the Benton Franklin Domestic Violence Shelter. Don’t doubt, though; with over 200,000 residents in our counties, we can do this!
How can you help? Here are some suggestions from the simplest to the most involved:
1. GIVE MONEY
The easiest action for you may also be the easiest one for us to work with as it allows us the freedom to fulfill any special request. We don’t normally recommend it first, however, as it comes at the price of placing us between you and the child you’re helping. That said, the easiest way to give is at our GoFundMe campaign.*
2. SHOP ONLINE
If you’d rather have a hand directly in picking out a costume, but you still don’t want to leave your computer chair (and who can blame you?), you can order costumes and/or accessories from our Amazon wishlist. If you sort by priority, you can be certain you’re getting what we really need right away.
3. HAVE USED COSTUMES PICKED UP
No money? No worries! We’ll even help you declutter. Pull those old costumes and accessories out of storage and send us an e-mail at email@example.com. One of us will arrange a convenient time with you for pickup. We’ll pick up costumes from anywhere within Benton and Franklin counties.
4. DROP OFF USED COSTUMES
This suggestion does require that you leave the house, but it doesn’t require any more money than the last suggestion. Instead of e-mailing us to pick up your costumes and accessories, you can drop them off at any of our collection points.
5. ASK AROUND
Chances are you aren’t the only person who thinks this is an awesome idea and who would also like to help out. Why not spread the word? You can even collect your family’s old costumes and have them picked up with your own!
6. SHOP OFFLINE
Collection points exist for more than just your old costumes, though. If you want to put a little more effort into shopping for new costumes, we’ll really appreciate it. A lot of times you’ll be able to find better prices at Walmart or Costco for the exact same items as those on the Amazon wishlist.
7. SEW/CRAFT & DONATE COSTUMES
Crafty? We’re working hard to make Halloween as magical as possible for the children at the Domestic Violence Shelter. Costumes don’t have to be store bought in order to be loved. In fact, the best costumes have love poured into them long before they reach their child.
8. E-MAIL US FOR HELP WITH SEWING/CRAFTING
If you’re crafty but unable to afford crafting supplies, please e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org so we can work something out. (If you have an overabundance of crafting supplies that you haven’t used, send us an e-mail as well.)
9. TELL US WHAT WE MISSED
You probably have an idea of a way you can help us that we’d be really grateful for but haven’t even thought of yet. Please feel free to send us an e-mail or message us on Tumblr with your ideas!
Additionally, we’re willing to accept help from businesses and other institutions in the counties. How can businesses help?
1. HANG A FLIER
We have some fliers available that you can print out and hang in a convenient location. Pick your favorite and just print that page.
2. BECOME A COLLECTION POINT
All it takes to become a costume collection point is a place for you to keep the costumes until we come and collect them. If you’d like to become a collection point, please e-mail us at email@example.com with business or institution name, address, website (if any), and directions for those wishing to drop off costumes. (e.g. “Take costume to register,” “Donation box located in front office.”)
3. DONATE COSTUMES
Remember, we’re doing this so kids have costumes. Bottom line. Why not give some?
*It’s important to note that Ladies of Letters are not Domestic Violence Services, we just wanted to help the kids under their care. Money given toward this campaign will go directly toward the purchase of Halloween costumes and not to DVS. If you or a loved one would like to contact or donate to DVS, you can do so through their website.
